Are you familiar with the chemical BPA? Bisphenol A, otherwise known as BPA, is an industrial chemical used to make plastic. It is also used to make the resins found inside metal cans. According to the World Health Organization, studies have linked BPA to obesity, ADHD, cancer, diabetes, and infertility. In fact, the FDA has actually banned the use of BPA in the making of baby bottles and sippy cups.
As we all know, obesity rates among both children and adults are on the rise. Researchers were curious to see if obese children had more BPA in their systems than children who were not overweight. Not surprisingly, studies found that children with high levels of BPA in their urine were two times more likely to be overweight than their peers.
The experts aren't sure of the exact consequences of ingesting BPA, which, quite frankly, is all I needed to hear. If there is even a possibility of a connection between a strong chemical and obesity, cancer, or any other disease, I will do my best to make sure my family stays away from that chemical.
Think of all the metal and plastic we put in our mouths and our children's mouths on a daily basis: water bottles, plastic utensils, straws, soda cans, energy drinks, the cups we get from fast food restaurants and convenience stores...the list goes on and on. Now, close your eyes and make a mental list all of the canned food you buy. All of that food - whether it's canned veggies, fruit, or soup - has BPA. Scary stuff!
Luckily, avoiding BPA isn't as daunting as it seems. Here's how to do it:
- Limit the amount of canned foods you eat each week and try to not eat anything out of a can more than three times a week (even healthy foods like sardines and salmon).
- Eat fresh fruits and vegetables (frozen is the next best option).
- Keep fresh water in your fridge in glass containers, and cut back on drinking out of cans.
