When people start a sugar detox, we always get one major question: “What can I put in my coffee?!”
Taking the sweetener out of your morning cup can be one of the biggest adjustments when you decide to take a break from sugar. But just because you’re removing sweetener, doesn’t mean you can’t have a delicious drink.
Here are some great ingredients to liven up your morning cup without using a sweetener of any kind. Before you know it, you'll wonder how you ever liked drinking your coffee sweet!
Cinnamon
If you only break out the cinnamon around the holidays — you’re missing out! Cinnamon is not only packed with flavor, but it helps regulate your blood sugar and prevent spikes and dips.
Adding a pinch of cinnamon will take away some of the bitterness of the coffee. Now, it won’t taste sweet, necessarily, especially if you’re early in the detox. But it will taste a lot smoother and you’ll have that nice cinnamon-y aftertaste to enjoy.
Vanilla Extract
Though vanilla extract smells sweet, it doesn’t contain any sugar. You can add about a teaspoon of extract to your coffee for a faint vanilla taste.
Adding pure vanilla extract is completely different than adding vanilla flavored creamer to your coffee. Vanilla creamers are usually full of artificial ingredients and always come with some kind of sweetener. By adding pure vanilla and a milk of your choice, you get the flavor of a creamer without all the junk.
Coconut Milk
Coconut milk is so delicious, it seems like it has to be bad for you. It’s just too good! Lucky for us, coconut milk is full of healthy fats and a wonderful dairy alternative. I honestly prefer using coconut milk in coffee and tea because it’s so full of flavor. Without any sweeteners, you get a rich, coconut taste and the creamy consistency holds up to the strongest brew.

If you don’t like coconut, try almond milk. In coffee, it tastes very similar to skim milk. Plus, almond milk doesn’t spoil as quickly as dairy, so one batch can last for a while.
