3 Ways to Get Healthy As a Family

Starting new habits around food and exercise is an amazing first step to a healthy life. So, why keep all that amazingness to yourself?

Studies have shown that when you have a support system on your road to health, you’re more likely to lose weight and see long term success. If your family can give you the support you need to thrive, you’ll reach your goals faster and get the whole family healthy in the process.

Now, families and new ways of eating aren’t always a match made in heaven. Sometimes your partner may tempt you to turn to old habits. Ever had your husband bring home ice cream, right after you told him you were trying to eat well (we have!)? Well, he might be trying to support you, but doesn’t quite understand that you want to approach your health in a new and different way.

Or, maybe the kids keep asking for macaroni and cheese (or don’t love all the vegetables you’re adding to their diet). That’s okay. Children’s taste in food won’t change overnight, but with a little patience, they’ll enjoy whole, healthy food just as much as you do.

To help your family adapt new habits, here are three tips on how to get healthy as a family.

Be a Role Model

Did the old “Do as I say, not as I do” quote ever work on you as a kid? No way! If you tell your kids to be healthy while you snack on a bag of chips, it’s not going to work out well. Children model their behavior on what they see. So, if they see a parent who chooses healthy foods and loves to get a little exercise – your kids will do the same.

That doesn’t mean you have to be perfect. We all have slips ups and that’s no big deal! But, if you make an effort to choose whole, natural foods and get a little activity, your kids (and partners, too) will start modeling your positive behavior, and you’ll all be well on your way to a healthy lifestyle.

Cook Together

Around dinner time, ever feel like a line cook just taking orders from everybody else? Then, when you finally get to eat, everybody’s left the table! This has definitely happened and believe us, eating a cold meal alone at the table is no fun. And it makes eating healthy feel even harder.

Instead, get the whole family in the kitchen. When your kids have a chance to help make the meal, they’re less likely to push it away and demand hot dogs. Okay, with little ones you might still get the occasional hot dog demand, but you’ll still get to spend quality time as a family making whole, healthy food.

This also gives you a chance to teach your children about food. Tell them why you’re choosing these foods for dinner. Let them see how different foods change as hit the stove top. Exciting a child’s curiosity will keep them interested in your healthy choices. And by having a hand in making dinner, your child feels like an accomplished, important part of the family. Plus, dinner tastes even better when you all know you worked hard to get it to the table!

Also, as the chef of the kitchen, what you eat is up to you. That means no making custom meals for every picky eater. Instead, each person will get to help make the meal that you all will enjoy.

Lastly, cooking together gives you time with your family – with NO SCREENS! How often does that happen?

Find Fun Ways to Be Active

Kids can be great inspiration when it comes to fun ways to get a little more activity in your day. When your kids are running around playing tag, they aren’t thinking “Wow, this is great cardio. I hope I’m getting enough steps in.” Kids move because it feels good and they enjoy the simple fun of playing!

So, next time your kids are kicking a ball around in the backyard or playing hide and seek – join them! When exercise is a game (especially one you play with people you love), you won’t stare down the clock waiting for it to end. You’ll have fun...and show your kids who's the real hide and seek champion!

Also, try to schedule more active family outings. Maybe that means trips to the park, going for hikes, or heading to the lake for a swim. As the weather gets cold, check out indoor recreation centers where you can swim, run, or play basketball all year round (and the fees are usually very reasonable, especially for kids!).

Soon, “exercise” just becomes valuable family time. This way, you won’t dread working out. In fact, it might be the best part of your day.
