First things first, if you are looking to take advantage of the many health benefits of turmeric, you aren't going to get the results you're after by simply eating a lot of Indian curry, ingesting large quantities of the raw root, or picking up the first bottle of turmeric supplements you see at a drug store.

So before you run out to the grocery store and stock up on raw turmeric root and fancy capsules...

It's crucial that you understand a few things about how to get a therapeutic effect from curcumin, a substance in turmeric.

Let's simplify the process of researching the highest quality turmeric supplements:

1. Select a turmeric supplement that is all-natural.

Now this may seem obvious, but you would be surprised how many brands of supplements out there, found at grocery stores and vitamin shops, contain fillers and binders, to keep the price down, at your expense. Not only are these extra ingredients unhealthy, they can actually be harmful to your health!

2. Is it 3rd party tested for purity and contaminants?

This is such an important factor, one that applies to all supplements, and something that is often overlooked. You need to be able to trust that, a) what you're ingesting is truly pure turmeric and b), that doesn't contain any harmful contaminants. 3rd party testing is the only way to know for sure, so don't overlook this when your health is at stake.

3. Does the daily dose contain 1,500mg of turmeric?

In order to get a therapeutic dose, it's essential that you take 1,500mg every day. If you want to break up the servings throughout the day, that's perfectly fine, but if you aren't taking 1,500mg a day, it's unlikely you'll get the desired results and health benefits

4. Know the ingredients. Does it contain piperine (the active ingredient in black pepper) and ginger?

1. Contact the manufacturer.

The owner/creator of the product MUST be willing to get on the phone with me to have a thorough discussion about the product. I always ask where the ingredients are sourced, what the manufacturing process is like, and who exactly is involved in the production of the product. If the owner is not willing to discuss these critical components with me, I do not try it nor would I recommend it.

2. Test it for 30 days.

Once I feel comfortable with what I have read and discussed with the creator, I use the product myself for a minimum of 30 days before sharing it with my readers and clients. Directions:

Boil water in a tea kettle or in a pot on the stove. Combine all other ingredients in a mug. Pour boiling water over everything. Stir to mix well. Enjoy!
