“Wow Isabel, your skin looks so healthy! What’s your secret?”
I get this comment quite often, especially as I reach my late 30’s and my peers are battling aging skin, rosacea and other challenging skin conditions that are often embarrassing and difficult to manage.
You see, I didn’t always have great skin…
Actually, for most of my teens and twenties, I was plagued by terrible acne that I was always trying to cover up. I even used to cut my hair with bangs just to cover up as much of my face as possible!
When you’re a teenager acne just seems like something that comes with the territory, but when you graduate college, start your career and are still battling these nasty blemishes all over your face, it seems like it will never end.
My parents, in an effort to help me as much as possible, took me to 6 different dermatologists, each one recommending a different pill or potion that was supposed to do the trick. Unfortunately for me and my parents’ wallet, none of these strategies ever worked long term.
Sure, there was the occasional short-term win, but those pimples would always come back and many times worse than before.
And I was once again left with red, blotchy, irritated skin from trying so many different creams and medications.
So how did I finally end this nasty cycle of terrible skin?
Well, it kind of happened by accident…
As I learned more about nutrition and started cleaning up my eating habits, my skin just started to naturally clear up. It was a side effect that I did NOT know would happen, but, of course, I was thrilled!
Here my goal was to lose weight and get into better shape, but I had gained the extra benefit of clearer skin…I’ll take it!
But I wasn’t totally out of the woods yet. Some of the irritated red spots still remained, especially on my forehead where my acne used to be at its worst.
By this time I knew conventional medications and creams were just not the right road for me, so I finally started listening to my mother and began putting whole foods on my face.
Yep, you heard that right…food on my FACE!
My mom used to tell me that as a teenager in Chile she and her friends would put fresh carrot juice on their faces to clear up acne and give their skin a beautiful glow.
Well, in my teens and early twenties I didn’t want to hear about any of my mom’s “natural” cures. It wasn’t until I saw for myself the power of whole foods on my skin that I began to ask her for more of her natural recipes.
And that’s exactly what I do now. In fact, I ONLY use natural food treatments on my face and body.
Some of my favorites include…
• Apple Cider vinegar as a face toner
• Oatmeal, Milk and Honey as a face mask
• Ripe banana as a wrinkle fighter
• Coconut oil as my body moisturizer
And the list goes on and on.
Yes, youthful vibrant skin does come with healthy nutrition, but I am also a firm believer in infusing that healthy nutrition right onto your face. The results will last much longer than any of those expensive creams and potions you see the drug store shelves and you won’t be forcing all of those chemicals into your body.
Just like you don’t want to eat chemical foods, you don’t want to put chemicals on your body. What’s good for your body is also what’s good for your skin…
