Lately, I've been getting a lot of questions about the delicious American breakfast staples we all know and (possibly) love: bacon and cured meats.

The reason has to do with a recent publication by the World Health Organization (WHO) that accused red meat of being harmful to our health. The red meats they refer to include all cuts of beef, veal, pork, lamb, mutton, horse and goat.

I read this article very warily and found that unfortunately, the WHO failed to mention one very crucial point that explains why red meat can potentially be harmful to your health. And with so much information available, this is one VERY important aspect you must consider when choosing any store-bought food…

Chemically added preservatives.

Chemically added preservatives are a key ingredient in a lot of non-organic brands that might carry your favorite meats. These preservatives are terrible for your body, and are the real cause of many serious health issues associated with red meat.

Two distinct chemicals commonly used in meat curing for many processed meats are: sodium nitrate and sodium nitrite.

Both sodium nitrate and sodium nitrite are found in many types of store-bought meat. They are used as a preservative and bacteria-prevention agent in beef jerky, hot dogs, sliced meat, ham and bacon.

In fact, according to Martijn B Katan of the American Society for Nutrition, when we consume products that contain sodium nitrate, the natural bacteria in our mouth and digestive track convert it into sodium nitrite. The sodium nitrite then reacts with your blood and pulls the oxygen out of it, literally suffocating you from the inside. Yikes!

And when too much of your healthy blood loses oxygen, it can cause a disease called methemoglobinemia.

Common symptoms are:

    • Shortness of breath

    • Headache

    • Fatigue

    • Inability to exercise

    • Dizziness

The sodium nitrite also dilates arteries and can lead to an increased blood flow, creating potential for hypertension and heart disease.

Katan also notes that an even more severe concern with sodium nitrate is cancer. Both sodium nitrate and sodium nitrite are not carcinogenic on their own, but when they interact with the natural dietary amines in your body, they can cause cancer. The WHO states that "processed meat was classified as carcinogenic to humans… [and] causes colorectal cancer."

Fortunately, there's a very EASY solution for you to avoid these scary diseases and ailments: eat organic meat!

Certified organic meat is meat that has been cured and preserved with the all-natural and timeless preservative: sea salt.

Sea salt is free of nitrates and nitrites and is the best choice for your health and weight loss.

So when shopping for a healthy brand of red meat, be sure to grab the organic products off the shelf or purchase online. Stick to natural ingredients you recognize like sea salt, and steer clear from packaged meat that says sodium nitrate or sodium nitrite.
