The tough girl in me used to think Yoga was for sissies.
“You really want me to just sit in this position and breathe? What good is that?”
This is just one of the more polite phrases I used to think (and sometimes even say) to my devout yoga-following friends.
The day I saw a college friend that I hadn’t seen in several years.
“Wow girl, what happened to you? Are you still running?”
I asked her this because she REALLY did look great. She was lean, toned, and looked something I was not…well rested. She even looked younger than when I had last seen her 5 years prior!
I had to find out her secret.
She revealed to me that after suffering several injuries back-to-back she was dealing with constant knee pain, hip pain, and shoulder pain – some of it related to running, and some of it caused by plain ‘ol life stress…
So she started taking yoga classes at the recommendation of her orthopedist.
“Your doctor sent you to yoga class?!” I asked totally surprised.
“Yep! And not only did it get rid of most of my pains, it helped me better cope with stress.”
Deal with stress?
Now we’re talking!
At the time I had this conversation with her, both of my children were under the age of 3 and the stress of being a mom and keeping up with work and my home was starting to show in my body, my attitude, and (unfortunately) directly on my face.
I had to try the very method I had been poo-pooing for years - there were just so many benefits that I wanted to take advantage of.
And I’m so glad I did because…
After just a few classes I (and you can too) noticed a difference in my posture, strength, flexibility, AND stress relief!
The benefits were almost immediate and I had to take back all of the bad things I had thought – and sometimes said – about yoga.
Now I understood why so many professional athletes use yoga as part of their training.
LeBron James, forward for the Miami Heat basketball team, has been called the best basketball player in the world right now and he started doing yoga years ago to alleviate nagging lower back pain.
"Yoga isn't just about the body, it's also about the mind, and it's a technique that has really helped me," James told the Cleveland Plain Dealer back in 2009. “I had some lower-back problems a few years ago and once I started to do the yoga, it has helped them go away for now.”
So how about you? Where can yoga greatly improve areas of your life?
For me, picking up yoga did not mean I had to give up everything else I was doing. But I was able to add these unique stretches and poses to my current exercise routine to optimize what I was already doing. And it really paid off which is why I want to show you the exact program I use regularly, and in the comfort of my own home!
No equipment necessary, no high monthly fees, no embarrassment in group classes – all I need is me!
If you don’t know where to begin, here is my absolute favorite yoga program to do at home.
The 2-minute cardio flow is absolutely incredible and I can’t believe how much it gets my heart rate up while toning my muscles and increasing my flexibility.
