What's the #1 reason that most diets fail?
I ask all my new clients this question, and they're always stumped. Often, they'll say it's eating too many calories or too much fat. That dieters don't exercise, or their portions are out of whack, or they aren't eating at the right times throughout the day. People will offer up thousands of different reasons, but they never zero in on the main reason that most diets fail:
It's the food choices!
This may seem self-evident, but it's amazing how many people are actually sabotaging themselves by eating foods that their bodies just can't work with. It doesn't matter how long you spend on the treadmill, or how carefully you measure portions, you aren't going to see the results you want if you aren't eating the right foods.
Making the wrong food choices generally falls into two categories: eating foods that are wrong for everyone, and eating foods that are wrong for you.
Foods that are wrong for everyone
You're probably well aware of the foods in this category. They're the foods that wreak havoc on your digestive system and actually cause your body to store fat rather than burn it off.
Sugar and sugar substitutes are the chief villains in this category. If you eat too much sugar, your blood sugar spikes dangerously high, causing your body to release insulin. This in turn causes your body to store fat. Then your blood sugar drops, causing the well-known sugar "crash." Basically, sugar creates a vicious cycle where every sugary treat you eat causes your body to release insulin, which makes you crave more sugary food.
But sugar is sneaky, and it comes in many forms, many of which most people aren't even aware of. For instance, did you know that so-called "healthy" foods such as whole-wheat bread and pasta actually have the same effect on your body as white bread? They're immediately converted to sugar. So it doesn't really matter that you suffered through a dry turkey sandwich on wheat bread, since the bread may actually be worse for you than the mayo you left off.
Processed food is the other big boogeyman you need to look out for. Processing not only strips food of vital nutrients, but it also adds in harmful chemicals and additives that your body doesn't know what to do with. Those additives gum up your digestive system, leaving your body with less time to burn fat, because it's busy working overtime trying to pass unpronounceable chemicals.
Foods that are wrong for you
My biggest problem with most diet plans is that they don't acknowledge the fact that people have different bodies and different needs. Just because certain foods melt the fat off of one person doesn't mean they will work for everyone. There are as many different body types as there are types of people, and any successful diet has to acknowledge that. This is why metabolism typing is so important.
Depending on your metabolism type, there are certain foods you can eat - meats, fruits and veggies, and grains - that will boost your metabolism and help you shed those extra pounds. Similarly, there are healthy foods that may not offer the best options for you. Finding the foods that serve you - and avoiding the ones that don't - is absolutely essential when you're trying to lose weight and, more importantly, keep it off long term.
